Holtby joins Tottenham

With Lewis Holtby having announced his intention to leave FC Schalke 04 in the direction of Tottenham Hotspur when his contract expires on 30 June 2013, the two clubs and the player have now agreed to dissolve his contract before this date. The 22-year-old midfielder will join Spurs, currently fourth in the English Premier League, with immediate effect.

"We've found the best solution for everyone involved," said general manager Horst Heldt. "Lewis had indicated to us that he would have no objections to an early move, and we have collected a decent transfer fee five months before his contract was due to expire." Heldt thanked Holtby for the commitment he has shown to the club. "He's always conducted himself in a proper manner and gave his all for Schalke right up to the final day. We wish Lewis all the best and lots of luck for the future."

Lewis Holtby joined the Royal Blues from Alemannia Aachen at the start of the 2009/2010 season. After loan spells at VfL Bochum (second half of the 2009/2010 season) and FSV Mainz 05 (2010/2011 season), he returned to the club at the beginning of the 2011/2012 campaign. The Germany Under-21 captain has made a total of 99 Bundesliga appearances (55 for Schalke) and scored 16 (10) goals. He has made ten (6) DFB Cup appearances, scoring four (2) goals, plus 17 European appearances for Schalke (one goal). Holtby has been capped three times for Germany (one while at Schalke).
