Schalke loan Bastos from Lyon

Having already recruited Raffael, the Royal Blues have taken advantage of the ongoing transfer period to secure the services of a second Brazilian player. Michel Bastos has joined the club on loan from Ligue 1 outfit Olympique Lyon until 30 June 2014. Schalke have also negotiated an option to buy the 29-year-old midfielder, who has been handed the No9 shirt.

"We're very happy that Michel has joined us," said general manager Horst Heldt. "He's an internationally experienced player with special skills who can help us right away. He's also eligible to play in the Champions League."

Bastos, who is also a French national, began his professional career as an 18-year-old at Dutch first division side Feyenoord in 2001. To gain match practice, he went on loan to newly promoted side Excelsior in the 2002/2003 season, making 28 appearances. In 2003 he returned to Brazil, where he played for Atletico Paranaense before being loaned out to Grêmio (2004) and Figueirense (2005).

At the beginning of the 2006/2007 campaign Bastos made a permanent return to Europe. He made 98 Ligue 1 appearances for OSC Lille, scoring 25 goals. From the 2009/2010 season he wore the colours of Olympique Lyon, for whom he also made 98 top-flight appearances, finding the net 26 times. In the first half of this season the left-sided midfielder scored five goals in 12 matches. He made a combined total of 26 Champions League appearances for Lille and Lyon, netting five times. This season he made one appearance for Lyon in the Europa League.

Bastos has played ten times for Brazil (one goal), including five outings at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
