Clemens makes training debut

The Royal Blues have brought the fine Donaueschingen weather with them to Gelsenkirchen, it would seem. The first training session since they returned from the first of their two pre-season training camps took place under bright blue skies on Sunday morning. Among the players on view were five latecomers.

There was nothing untoward about their late return, of course. As agreed with club officials, the three senior Germany internationals, Julian Draxler, Benedikt Höwedes and Roman Neustädter, plus Under-21 squad members Sead Kolasinac and Christian Clemens were excused from the opening training camp due to being away on international duty at the end of last season. For Clemens, the new arrival from FC Cologne, it was his first appearance in a blue-and-white kit.

The picture presented on the training ground opposite the club's main office building was thus a different one compared with the previous week's. In the absence of the academy players who took part in the Donaueschingen training camp, the fans in attendance were treated to the sight of new signings Adam Szalai, Felipe Santana, Leon Goretzka and Clemens being put through a series of quick passing drills. The first session of the day ended with a practice match on a reduced-size pitch.
