Kirchhoff forced out of Qatar

Schalke's mid-season camp has come to a premature end for Jan Kirchhoff. The 23-year-old new signing injured his right ankle challenging for the ball in training on Sunday. "Jan has damaged a ligament," said Horst Heldt. "He's had a cast fitted and his foot will be immobilised for seven days. It therefore makes no sense for him to stay in Doha."

Kirchhoff will undergo a further examination in Munich on Tuesday. "We considered keeping him here at first but after the second examination in Doha we sat down together and decided it made more sense for him to travel back to Germany," said Heldt.

"Jan originally thought the injury was not all that serious and he'd be able to resume training after a short break but then the x-rays in Doha revealed the ligament damage," Heldt continued. "I'm not overly concerned, however. Jan will be out for about a fortnight all told."

Schalke's general manager holds the versatile defender in great esteem. "He's settled in quickly and been made to feel very welcome. It was all going really well – but for that tackle," he said.
