Sam was born in Kiel on 31 January 1988. He began his footballing career in his home town at TuS Mettenhof and had spells at FC Kilia Kiel and Holstein Kiel before joining the youth setup at Hamburg SV in 2004. While with the Red Shorts he made four Bundesliga appearances and one UEFA Cup appearance. In 2008 Sam joined FC Kaiserslautern on loan, scoring 14 goals in 59 second-division outings. He also made two DFB Cup appearances for the Red Devils (one goal).
Since joining Bayer Leverkusen at the start of the 2010/2011 season he has made 83 Bundesliga appearances (23 goals) and seven DFB Cup appearances (six goals). To this can be added ten outings in the Champions League (two goals) and 12 in the Europa League (three goals). Sam represented Germany at Under-19, Under-20 and Under-21 level before making his senior international debut in a friendly against Ecuador on 29 May 2013. He has played for his country five times to date.
