“I’m delighted that Eric Maxim has decided to sign for us,” said sporting director Horst Heldt. “He is very versatile, but first and foremost our plan is to use him in a central, attacking position.”
Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting was born in Hamburg on 23rd March 1989. He made his way through the youth teams at Teutonia 05, Altona 93 and FC St. Pauli, before eventually joining Hamburger SV in 2004. He made 13 Bundesliga appearances for their first team in the 2007/08 campaign, before joining 1. FC Nürnberg on loan for a season. He played 25 games in the Bundesliga for FCN (5 goals) and also made one cup appearance. He got his chance in the Bundesliga again with HSV in 2010/11, making 10 appearances in Germany’s top flight (2 goals). He also played in six cup games (1 goal) and eight European matches (2 goals) for Hamburg. The Cameroon international then made his breakthrough at 1. FSV Mainz 05, scoring 20 goals in 74 Bundesliga games since the 2011/12 season. He also featured in six cup games (2 goals) and one European encounter.
Choupo-Moting has both German and Cameroonian citizenship. He featured for Germany between U18 and U21 level, before opting to play for Cameroon’s senior national team. He was at the 2010 World Cup with the ‘Indomitable Lions’ and also featured in all three of Cameroon’s recent group games in Brazil.
