Johannes Geis: Free throws instead of free kicks

It’s already well known that Johannes Geis is one of the best set-piece takers in the Bundesliga, but the midfielder is also pretty assured under the basket. Ahead of departing for the training camp, the 22-year-old took part in and won a shoot-out competition against Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting, Ralf Fährmann and Gerald Asamoah.

As a reward, he has been allowed to have a shot at the basket during halftime of the game between Orlando Magic and the Washington Wizards on Saturday. “That will be a great addition to all the training. I’m already a little excited about the throw,” admits Geis. “It’s something different when you have thousands of people watching you.” One of his opponents on the free-throw line will incidentally be an old acquaintance: Kyriakos Papadopoulos. “We have already told Geisi that he has to win,” chuckled his roommate and friend Sascha Rieter. “If he loses, then there’s a small forfeit for him.”

This playful comment from Riether underlines the good mood in the team. “The team’s character is world class,” praises Geis. “It’s great fun to play together with the boys. Moving to Schalke last summer was definitely the right decision.”

The midfielder is also particularly enthusiastic about the fans. He says, “The support in the first half of the campaign was outstanding. Every home game was an experience. I still get some goosebumps when I think back to various moments of recent months. Celebrating the last-minute winner against Hertha, the choreography ahead of the home game against Hannover and so much more – I will never forget that!”

Geis is also hopeful for more successful chapters in the second half of the season. “Every player works hard so that we can finish the campaign with success. We have to give everything we have,” he said. “I think that we are on a good path. I think that if you see us in training, you will see that we are giving our all.”
