Nabil Bentaleb: The fans really pushed us on

There was plenty for the FC Schalke 04 players and fans to smile about after the 2-0 victory over Hertha BSC on Saturday evening. After the game ended Nabil Bentaleb, provider of both S04 goals, scorer of the second Leon Goretzka and club captain Benedikt Höwedes reviewed the game with

Nabil Bentaleb:

The fans were really behind us the whole game. I am pleased for them that we were able to give them three points. It was a tough match, but we remained focused throughout. We were quick to close down the ball and created a lot of chances, and as a result we deserved the win. The team showed the quality we have. We had three games in a week and rose to the occasion for all three and that will give us a lot of confidence and get back to our best selves again. Hopefully we can keep this run going and continue to develop as a team.

Leon Goretzka:

At half time I received a lot of encouragement from the boys after I missed the first two very good opportunities. But all good things come in threes. Fortunately, in the second half the ball went in. We are not saying that it is all down to the new pitch, but there is definitely an element of that. You can move the ball around a lot more smoothly. Overall, our positional play was very good, we managed to pick each other out in space often and were bold in possession. When you all help each other out, things become a lot easier. We need to deliver this sort of performance game after game, then we will see where we are at the end of the season.

Benedikt Höwedes:

We played with a lot of patience and waited for our chances. We let the ball do the running and tried to keep the ball on the ground when attacking, which we did fantastically. The opener was a brilliantly worked goal. We can be very happy with our performance because we’ve finally shown the football that we want to see here at Schalke. Doing a lot of running always has to be the basis, but you can’t forget to play good football – we did both well. There’s still no need to talk about a pursuit of any kind, but I hope that the game in Munich was something of a turning point. Now we need to kick on from this performance during the week again POAK in the Europa League.
