Markus Weinzierl: We were in control after taking the lead

FC Schalke 04 head coach Markus Weinzierl and his PAOK FC counterpart Vladimir Ivic spoke to schalke04.de after the match to discuss their teams' respective performances and the game as a whole.

Markus Weinzierl:

I am very satisfied with my team's performance. The 3-0 win has put us in a very strong position for the home leg and with regard to progressing to the next round.

We had a few problems in the first ten minutes - the atmosphere in the stadium was a part of the reason for that. However, after taking the lead we got the game under control and we managed to score another two at the end. Klaas-Jan Huntelaar's goal was the icing on the cake. I am very pleased for him getting back on the scoresheet after such a long time out.

The result was certainly very much a deserved one. We dominated possession and had the game under our control, and I was very impressed by the way in which we did so. I believe that we are going in the right direction and the job for the next few weeks is to sustain that.

Vladimir Ivic:

We were not especially bad, and nor in my eyes were Schalke particularly good. Despite the goals we were fairly untroubled defensively, at least until their second, and because of that I think the scoreline being such a distant one is an unfair reflection on what actually happened. In the first half we had strong spells, but we were playing an experienced opposition and ultimately paid the price for giving too much away.

Obviously we are very disappointed. We had wished to give ourselves a much better chance of qualification, but now we have to shrug off this defeat as quickly as we can and look forward. In football, anything is possible. We know that we have not put ourselves in the best position to go through, but despite that we will be sure to give everything in the return leg.
