Guido Burgstaller: We showed a great mentality

There was a palpable sense of relief among the FC Schalke 04 players and staff when the final whistle sounded to confirm the 1-0 away win over 1. FSV Mainz 05. With 33 points on the board, the Royal Blues can go into the international break with clearer minds, while a few of the game's protagonists shared their views on the encounter with schalke04.de.

Sead Kolasinac:

We had a bit of luck on our side today, but that has often not been the case this season. However, it was luck that we made for ourselves, and we took advantage of it. We absolutely wanted a win before the international break, and we managed to do that. Now, we can go into the break relaxed and really look ahead to the derby in two weeks' time. We are still yet to get ourselves where we should be in the table but we are on the road to rectifying that. We will give all we have until the end and do our very best to get as many points as possible. We will see where things are at the end.

Guido Burgstaller:

It was a very important three points for us to get. We knew before the game that playing in Mainz is always a struggle, and in the first half we did not do a particularly good job of it. It was visible that the number of games we have played was catching up with us. We scored very quickly after the break, and we made enough good chances that we could have added to our tally, but we were not clinical or effective on the counter. Still, we showed an excellent mentality on the day to see ourselves through to the 1-0 win. I think that it was a deserved win overall because we gave so little away in the second half. Now we are excited for the derby in two weeks.

Christian Heidel:

Of course I had given the game a lot of thought and how it would be for me returning to Mainz. I already had something of a lump in the throat because the people here have been so good to me. However, there was no part of me that wanted to see Mainz score today. In that sense it was no different to any other game, even if I did not run into the centre circle celebrating when we made it 1-0. The win was a very important one but we are still not where we should be in the table. I think that you need 38 or 39 points to be completely sure of avoiding a downward slide, and we have not shifted our focus to the Europa League yet. For now we are looking ahead to two weeks' time and the derby. It will be a difficult game, but also a special one. We will need to play with the kind of heart and courage that we did in the first derby of the season. This break is coming after a very intense spell and has come at the right time for us. It is important we use the time well.
