Markus Weinzierl: Vital win before internationals

FC Schalke 04's match against 1. FSV Mainz 05 on Bundesliga Matchday 25 marked their thirteenth game in the last six weeks. Following on from the 1-0 triumph, Markus Weinzierl was joined by Mainz head coach Martin Schmidt to discuss the game and the two teams' performances.

Markus Weinzierl:

The boys gave everything. It was our thirteenth match in the last six weeks - I have to pay real compliments to my team. We initially got off to a very strong start, but after that Mainz grew into the game and were the better side, while we found it difficult to contain them - it was clear to see that the number of games were taking their toll a little. In the second half we found the perfect solution to that when Sead Kolasinac scored. That helped us a lot and we went on to defend it well. Of course, a little bit of luck was necessary, but we made a few chances that really should have made it 2-0 to us. But it all ended up fine for us. We kept a clean sheet and we are glad to get the three points, especially going into the international break, which made them even more vital. We have had a heavy six weeks but it has ended perfectly.

Martin Schmidt:

We showed Schalke too much respect in the first quarter of an hour, but from the 20th minute we were the better side and put them under a lot of pressure. You could see that we got a lot more corners than them, and they looked to be feeling the effects of their midweek match. We made two or three half-chances, and that was important for us in terms of having somethign to build on. We did a lot of preparation work for the second half but we got ourselves into a situation that we did not defend well. We failed to win the ball back in that move and we were punished for that. Their goal of course made things tougher. We tried everything and made our substitutions with that in mind. We did well around the penalty area but not in it - we did not create enough chances.
