Markus Weinzierl: It all came at once

After FC Schalke 04's disappointing 2-1 defeat away to SV Darmstadt 98, S04 head coach Markus Weinzierl spoke to alongside his SVD counterpart Torstein Frings.

Markus Weinzierl:

The chances to win were there. But we lost, and within that we missed a penalty and received a red card. Today, everything came at once. Darmstadt scored with their first attack, and from that moment we were chancing a deficit. Our killer instinct passed us by in front of goal. We created a lot of chances, but we did not take them.

After making it 1-1, we were playing to win it once again. We had the chances to make it 2-1 - one example being the opportunity that fell to Leon Goretzka. We wanted desperately to win, which made the stoppage time winner for them sting even more. If you know your opposition are strong from set pieces, you simply have to cover your lines better.

In terms of energy, duels and springs, we were not second best today. But football is decided by the goals. A win would have put us up to seventh and in a very good position going forward. We are very, very disappointed.

Torsten Frings:

We cannot pretend that was not a fortunate win for us, but it is the kind of luck that we have not had throughout the season. As strong as we were, we came very close to leaving empty-handed despite the performance. The team was rewarded for their spirit today. We are delighted to have got the points.
