Markus Weinzierl: A bitter pill to swallow

Ajax coach Peter Bosz was understandably delighted at the final whistle. Markus Weinzierl, however, was left to console his team after a great fight. Here’s what both menhad to say after a dramatic Europa League Quarter Final.

Markus Weinzierl:

I want to compliment my team for a fantastic performance. We showed such a great attitude. When you fight that hard and still get eliminated it is a bitter pill to swallow. Every single one of us is so disappointed. We were en route to victory before conceding a goal we should have defended better - although that is saying nothing against Matija Nastasic. When you are leading 3-0 you have to play better as a whole and not help the opponent into the semi-finals.

We know we have a very big game in front of us against Leipzig. We need a few hours to process this defeat and the unfortunate elimination. We had a dream, but now it’s all about bouncing back and getting the mind focused on the task at hand.

Peter Bosz:

It feels fantastic. I am so proud of the boys. We didn’t play out best stuff today, but we achieved our aim, even though we were a man light at the end as well. My team showed such great character with ten men. We were tired, but we came at them one more time. Nobody thought we would score after they got their third goal, but we believed in ourselves and demonstrated we have an excellent mentality. I don’t care who we draw in the last four, we can be a match for anyone. It doesn’t have to be Celta Vigo though, as we have already played against them
