Bastian Oczipka: Excited for new challenge

Bastian Oczipka met with schalke04.de before the team’s departure to China for his first interview as a Royal Blue. The left-back spoke about his transfer, his aims, the trip to China and his former neighbour Gerald Asamoah.

Bastian Oczipka, a warm welcome to Schalke. Blue and white suits you!

Thank you very much. It is still slightly unfamiliar but I really like the colours.

You were a certain starter at Frankfurt over the past five years. Why did you decide to make the move to FC Schalke 04?

I had some excellent talks with Christian Heidel and Domenico Tedesco over the last few weeks. They told me what their ambitions are for Schalke. Moreover the coach explained his philosophy to me and said that I would fit into his concepts well. I could sense the excitement both from Heidel and the coach for the upcoming season. It wasn’t easy for me to say goodbye to Frankfurt though. I had an amazing time there but I am looking forward to this new challenge. After all, Schalke is one of the Bundesliga’s top clubs.

I said a quick hello to the group. I will get to know them properly in China. I know most of the players already as you cross paths with each other time and again in the Bundesliga.

What goals have you set for yourself?

I want to help the club reach their objectives for the new season after an up-and-down year. I am hugely motivated.

You have been working hard and been going far and wide. You’ve had the training camp with Eintracht in America, and now you are heading to China with your new club. Have you had any issues acclimatising with the time differences?

I’m a bit jetlagged. I was wide awake at six in the morning today. It won’t surprise you that this is not my typical time to wake up (laughs). But I will get used to it.

What are you expecting as you travel to China?

I am really looking forward to training with the team for the first time. I think it will be really interesting playing against Besiktas and Inter Milan in our friendlies. Luckily we got the Visa through very quickly for China.

You will also be reunited with your former neighbour from your time at FC St. Pauli...

Indeed. Gerald Asamoah lived just two houses further down from me at the time, which is why we often travelled to training together. I had a lot of fun playing with Asa. I’m sure we will find some time while we are in China to catch up again.
