Guido Burgstaller: I was itching to come on

There were happy faces all-round at full-time in the VELTINS Arena as spoke to Burgstaller, Naldo and head coach Domenico Tedesco

Guido Burgstaller:

During the break, we set ourselves the target of being more aggressive and energetic. Both the two early goals were fantastic. I’m delighted to have been able to help the team in my first home game of the season. Of course I was itching to come on. I think the win is deserved after that second-half performance. In the first half we didn’t do so well before the goal. We improved significantly in the second period – we controlled the match and the opponent. Hopefully that can continue. I’m excited for the next match.

It was a very special day for me. We won, it’s my birthday, our fans are happy. It was a very tough win. We didn’t play so well in the first half. Stuttgart were the more aggressive team, which is why we made some tactical changes. After the break we did things much better. That fact that on top of that I was also able to score makes me very happy. When the free kick came in, I had a good feeling.

Domenico Tedesco:

We started well and dominated proceedings for the first ten minutes but then we struggled. We tried to change that by making changes at half-time, By the time we got to the break, we were just hoping we weren’t losing if I’m being honest. It seemed like only a matter of time before they’d score again.

At half time, we made changes and performed much better. We wanted to apply more pressure and stop being as passive. Essentially, we wanted to be pressing six to eight meters higher up the pitch so we could press. When we did that, VfB Stuttgart made mistakes. We’re happy to have two wins out of three but we know there’s a long way to go.
