Burgstaller wins against team-mate Nastasic

Yevhen Konoplyanka, Matija Nastasic and Guido Burgstaller all represented their national teams on Friday October 6th in World Cup qualifiers. Thilo Kehrer and Alexander Nübel were also in action for Germany U21s in their bid to qualify for the 2019 European Championship. caught up with how the Royal Blues fared for their respective countries. 

Burgstaller scores first goal for Austria

Serbia against Austria pitted two Schalke players, Guido Burgstaller and Matija Nastasic, against each other. Burgstaller scored the equaliser for his side after 25 minutes to make the score 1-1; Luka Milivojevic had got the opener for Serbia. Marko Arnautovic put his side ahead in the 76th minute only for Nemanja Matic put the ball into his own net seven minutes later. In a dramatic climax, Louis Schaub bagged the winner one minute before the end of normal time to give Austria the win, though with 12 points, they cannot qualify for Russia 2018. Serbia had already sealed their place. Their final game is against Georgia on October 9th. 

Continued suspense for Konoplyanka

There will be a tense conclusion for Yevhen Konoplyanka and Ukraine in Group I. Ukraine’s 2-0 victory against Kosovo increases their chances of reaching the World Cup finals. Third-placed Ukraine play Croatia on Monday. Both teams are on 17 points but Croatia are ahead on goal-difference. Whoever finishes in second will enter the playoffs, as Iceland, on 19 points, are expected to defeat bottom-of-the-table Kosovo at home. 

Impressive performances by Kehrer and Nübel

Germany U21s won their second game in the 2019 European Cup qualification, beating Azerbaijan 6-1. Both Royal Blues played the full 90. Philipp Ochs, Mahmoud Dahoud, Marcel Hartel and Cedric Teuchert were on target for Die Mannschaft. The fourth score was an Azerbaijani own goal. Ilyas Safarzade converted from the spot to get Azerbaijan’s only goal.
