Domenico Tedesco: We're very happy

Following the final whistle in the Schwarzwald-Stadion, Domenico Tedesco, Bastian Oczipka, Max Meyer and Ralf Fährmann gave their thoughts on proceedings this afternoon.

Domenico Tedesco:

Freiburg were undefeated in their last 11 home games which shows how hard it is to come here and get a result. We’re happy as we got the win but, in the first half, we failed to get a grip on the game and Freiburg did very well. At half-time, we changed a few things and did much better afterwards. The game still shows though that we have work to do.

Christian Streich:

I thought the team did well. Schalke found it difficult in the first half. After Konoplyanka hit the post, we had a number of good chances ourselves to take the lead. However in the second half, we conceded a goal which was very unfortunate but that’s football.

Ralf Fährmann:

I’m glad that we’re doing the business home and away this season. It’s already our third away win this season but we can’t get complacent or rest on our laurels. Today was difficult as Freiburg played with tenacity which gave us issues in the first half. In the second half though we performed better and I think our second half performance meant we deserved to win. We have to keep working hard as it’ll pay off. We’re progressing and improving with each game and each win gives us more and more confidence.

Bastian Oczipka:

It wasn’t a great performance but sometimes you just have to get the job done and win the game. Freiburg are a side who work hard and are solid in front of their own fans. After their loss against Stuttgart, they gave their all today so I’m happy we’ve managed to get the three points.

Max Meyer:

We’re the first team to have won in Freiburg this season and it wasn’t easy. In the first half, we didn’t play as well as we’d have liked. We did manage to hit the woodwork but our opponents did that twice. After the break, we were much better. We pressed from the front and created chances but maybe we should have seen the game off better.
