Schalke's basketball team first took to the court in 1974 and the sport has played an important role in Gelsenkirchen ever since. In the ensuing period the basketballers have celebrated the odd success, winning the West German Basketball Association (WBV) Cup in 1975 and securing promotion to the Bundesliga in 1988.
The Royal Blues spent just one season in the top flight, however. A long spell in the second division and its successor competition, the Pro A, followed before Schalke took voluntary relegation to the 1st Regionalliga West. In 2011 the Royal Blues won the WBV Cup to lift their first trophy in 36 years.
The standout player in all this time was Christoph Körner, who represented Germany at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
