Thilo Kehrer captains U21s for first time

Yevhen Konoplyanka, Matija Nastasic, Donis Avdijaj and Nabil Bentaleb all represented their national teams in Tuesday’s World Cup qualifiers. Meanwhile, Thilo Kehrer, Alexander Nübel and Amine Harit were also in action in qualifying matches for the upcoming U21 European Cup. caught up with all the games.

Konoplyanka and Ukraine lose against group rivals

Yevhen Konoplyanka and Ukraine were defeated 2-0 by Gylfi Sigurdsson’s Iceland in a crunch game in the group. Sigurdsson, the former Hoffenheim player, scored twice as Iceland overtook Ukraine to move into second place with 16 points. Konoplyanka played the full 90 minutes but could not prevent his side slipping into joint third place alongside Turkey with 14 games with two games remaining. 

Nastasic on the bench in Ireland clash

Matija Nastasic watched on as Serbia strengthened their position as group leaders with a 1-0 win over the Republic of Ireland. Aleksandar Kolarov scored the winning goal ten minutes into the second half but Nastasic’s side had to play for the last 20 minutes with ten men after Nikola Maksimovic got send off in the 68th minute. 

Avdijaj and Kosovo wait on first victory

Kosovo lie bottom of their World Cup qualifying group with one point after losing 1-0 to Finland. Former Schalke striker Teemu Pukki scored the only goal of the game seven minutes from time, while Donis Avdijaj didn’t come on for Kosovo. 

Another loss for Bentaleb

Algeria’s 1-0 loss against Zambia makes it two consecutive defeats to the same nation after Saturday’s 3-1 home defeat. Having made the quarter finals of the 2014 World Cup, Bentaleb’s side can wave goodbye to the World Cup in Russia, with only one point from four games. Nigeria lead the group with ten points. 

Hard-fought victory for Kehrer and Nübel

Thilo Kehrer led his side to a 1-0 victory over Kosovo in the U21 Euro qualification. Kehrer played the whole match for the German U21s. Blue and Whites Alexander Nübel also started his second game in goal for the team. Werder Bremen’s Maximilian Eggestein got the only goal of the game, shortly after half-time. 

Harit misses spot-kick

Amine Harit was also successful in France’s U21 Euro qualifier against Kazakhstan. Schalke’s number 25 had scored in his side’s 1-1 friendly game against Chile, but missed an early penalty here. Martin Terrier bagged a hat-trick in the 4-1 win. Jonathan Bamba also netted for France.
